to investigate the problem. Please reopen it if you encounter that this
issue is still occurring in latest Ubuntu Karmic version, under the

I've premuted the options as I said originally. Choosing ALSA lets the
"test" sinewave play but sounds still don't work for applications.
I have since discovered that if I log in as the default user (the one
created by the 8.04 installer) and use the user switcher instead of
