Hardy Huron, Ubuntu 8.04 solved the problem. It must have been a new group of
sound card drivers, because all sound functions work well now, from login sound
to you tube film clips

Yes, I tried with movie player but not real player. I do get a beep when the

kind?
Could you check the volume settings on your laptop?
Try going into System->Preferences->Sound, report what each of the
entries in the Devices tab
