Does your laptop play sound on login? Can you play a sound file of some kind? No, I can't play a sound file of any kind. Could you check the volume settings on your laptop? Yes, with the graphical sliders all are at maximum. Try going into System->Preferences->Sound, report what each of the entries in the Devices tab says, then go to the Sounds tab and try playing some sounds back and report whether they work.
