Milan Bouchet-Valat, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Hardy desktop reached EOL on May 12, 2011.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
We were wondering if this is still an issue on a supported release? If
so
raulegastelo2: bug reports are really not the best place for that. We
can't be sure you're experiencing the same bug. I guess you'd better go
to Ubuntu forums, get help, and then report a new bug when you have
enough details. Thanks!

Thanks! Actually, the man page indeed says "read or write _data_ Compact
Discs", I tried to read an audio cd to an ISO image.
That leaves the original bug reporter's hang with cdrdao.
Milan, did you try cdrdao directly, e.g. "cdrdao read-cd myaudiocd.toc"?
Maybe try disabling HAL device polling
readcd by default reads data sectors and telling it to read
any sector type would make it behave suboptimal for audio CDs.
The best way to extract audio CDs is to call cdda2wav.
Cdda2wav is frequently enhanced and has a lot of internal knowledge
to read audio in a reliable way even if the media is
I just tried Schily's readcd, it gave me the same error message as
readom. cdrdao seems to work fine.

I have the same problem here, running intrepid amd64. I tried with two
drives, a internal Samsung PATA DVD+-RW drive, and an external USB drive
(Pioneer DVD-ROM in an PATA-to-USB case).
This might be related to #226650.

I've reproduced this bug using kernel 2.6.27-rc3 in Hardy (I cannot
upgrade this computer), using images provided by Ben Collins:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/pub/next/2.6.27-rc3. So it is very likely that
this bug also affects Intrepid (maybe I'll test it from a Live USB key
one of these days).

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
There hasn't been any recent activity in this bug report and we were
wondering if this is still an issue? The Ubuntu kernel team is actively
working on the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. If you could please
test the latest Alpha release for Intrepid it would be much appreciated
