Thanks! Actually, the man page indeed says "read or write _data_ Compact
Discs", I tried to read an audio cd to an ISO image.

That leaves the original bug reporter's hang with cdrdao.

Milan, did you try cdrdao directly, e.g. "cdrdao read-cd myaudiocd.toc"? 
Maybe try disabling HAL device polling with "hal-disable-polling --device 
/dev/scd0" during the attempt. You can reenable it with "hal-disable-polling 
--enable-polling --device /dev/scd0" afterwards...
