The answer I got at freedesktop's bugzilla:
"Failed to get EDID from monitor, and closed driver.
Your VGA cable is probably broken. But if it's not, there's not much we can do
about it."
Unfortunately there's not much that can be done. I would try to replace
the VGA cable.

I have a new install of Mythbuntu 8.04 (original release) and the
monitor is sometimes detected and sometimes not (in which case I get
this low-resolution problem). This is new hardware (AMD, ASUS MB, ASUS
6200). The same version of Mythbuntu and the same display worked

I have a nvidia geforce 6150 card with a Philips 14.1' LCD. Hardy boots
perfectly with the nv driver into 1280x800. But after I reboot, it falls
back to 640x480. I tried dpkg-reconfigure xorg/nvidia-glx-new and also
manually tried to do a nvidia-xconfig.
I have also tried to remove nvidia-glx-new

Oups, today I started my system with the hans monitor, and I got the
resolution problem.
I am in 640x380 with the Hanns-G HG216D monitor. I tried to reboot but
without effects.
