I have a new install of Mythbuntu 8.04 (original release) and the monitor is sometimes detected and sometimes not (in which case I get this low-resolution problem). This is new hardware (AMD, ASUS MB, ASUS 6200). The same version of Mythbuntu and the same display worked perfectly with my 2.4GHz P4 using an EVGA 6200.
There is something more going on here than just xorg and the monitor.
