Many thanks for your answer, Trel. From your information it seems it was
an nVidia driver issue. I hope you don't mind that I'll go ahead and
mark this bug as invalid for bash.

This solved the problem for me:
I edited /etc/modprobe.d/options
I added this line: NVreg_UseVBios=0
Then I rebooted. After rebooting, it was working again, does this solve it for
you too?

This is most likely not a bug in bash, but rather in the video driver,
which doesn't allow switching between X and the consoles. Can you supply
information on your brand of graphics hardware and the drivers used?
Please then mark this as a bug against the relevant xserver-xorg
package, and mark it
I've got the same problem under Ubuntu 8.10 (Ctrl+Alt+Fx results in a
blank screen instead of a prompt in a console window). This bug was
opened back in May, but it's still marked as "New"; what do we need to
do to get a response? Or are we not supposed to use console windows any
more in this ne

Also, if I login from a console (after stopping KDM from starting
automatically) and then I log out, I also get a blank screen rather than
the console again.
