Since this bug is caused by a incorrect screen resolution detection,
which is a temporary solution for bug 188764, I set this bug as a
duplicate of bug 188764 which should fix all these issues at the same
time
Thanks for these informations. If you remember it, can you say which
resolution you had in /etc/usplash.conf before you changed it? 640x480?
Also can you attach the file created by this command in a terminal so we
can know your graphic card? sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.txt

Thanks for your confirmation. Normally, the /etc/usplash.conf file
should have the same default resolution as Xorg. Can you change the
values in /etc/usplash.conf to be the good ones and then type "sudo
update-initramfs -u". Would be interesting to know if this bug is caused
by this wrong configura
there no non standard option in the grub configuration, the issue is
there when using the hardy desktop CD too for example
the xorg and usplash graphical resolution are not the same no, would
that be the issue?

I have an i386 installation of Hardy on a laptop that use opensource ATI
drivers and it works fine actually.
Can you also look if you use some non-default options like "vga=" in
/boot/grub/menu.lst and if the content of your /etc/usplash.conf file is
the same of your actual screen resolution when
