This worked for me on an i386 under Ubuntu 10.04 Maverick which would
not launch the jnlp files.
Good job thelinuxer.

Bugs,
Hello and Thank you Roger!
I have 64bit and the same issue. Have been searching for quite a while
installing various packages trying to get ROES working (a java based photograph
ordering system). Roger, your tip there did the trick. The lib32nss-mdns was
the key to my woes.
Much appreciation!
Hi guys,
I had the same problem on hardy 64bit. Here is how i solved the problem
sudo apt-get install ia32-sun-java6-bin
sudo update-alternatives --config javaws
Then I chose this option:
/usr/lib/jvm/ia32-java-6-sun/jre/bin/javaws

Hi!
The workaround described at http://dmartin.org/content/running-java-web-
start-apps-ubuntu-linux-amd-64 solves it only partialy. Application runs
in java5 not in 6. Java5 have serious problem in keyboard mapping in
Swing components and it is unusable for me. (I use Czech layout.)

I confirm that. The same problem in Hardy 64bit. Package lib32nss-mdns
didn't solve it.
Try java fx here:
https://openjfx.dev.java.net/learning.html
In 32bit Gutsy it works fine.

In my version installing lib32nss-mdns didn't help.
When I invoke javaws http://files.gokgs.com/javaBin/cgoban.jnlp I still see the
same error:
netx: Launch Error: Could not launch JNLP file.
(java.lang.NullPointerException null)
Do you know what could be wrong ?

I had the same issue with english packages, java exception on loading
the webstart-app was "java.net.UnknownHostException". It seems that
32bit DNS resolving was not working, installation of the package
lib32nss-mdns resolved the issue for me.
