Um this is somewhat out-of-date...
There was a problem - but this has been solved along the way. I think
what happened way back then was that although I was able to get online
via the LAN card and adsl router, the network applet indicated that
there was no connection - I am guessing somewhat here,

Could you please rephrase and do a step by step instruction like.
1. do this
2. do that
3. and now
4. ...
result: this happens
expected: this should happen.
