I spent the evening confirming that the 2.6.25 coretemp.c will indeed
work in 2.6.24 with a single minor code change. I built a new 2.6.24
coretemp.ko and I can read the thermal sensors without issue now. I have
solved the problem for me, but it doesn't fix the larger issue of lack
of 45nm sensor s
It will continue to be a problem until the coretemp.c from kernel 2.6.25
is added to 2.6.24, or ubuntu uses the 2.6.25 kernel.

Checked lm-sensors-3 source package from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/hardy/lm-sensors-3 and verified that
this issue is at least partially NOT fixed. The coretemp_detect
subroutine in sensors-detect lacks model 0x16 and 0x17. This is a
difference from the released lm-sensors 3.0.0 code which
this is fixed in hardy (see the lm-sensors-3 source package)
