i confirm bug with Maverick 10.10 on a Packard Bell Easynote. Speakers work but
not headsets.

I can confirm the existence of this bug and the mentioned workaround on
an up-to-date version of Ubuntu Lucid 32bit, even with the ALSA backport
modules installed.

I can confirm the modification of alsa-base.conf fixed this issue.

adding 'options snd-hda-intel model=dallas' to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
solves the problem. However, the signal is weak and sound is not loud.
With the same amplifier I get 3 times louder sound with a CD player than
with the computer.
