I can confirm the existence of this bug and the mentioned workaround on
an up-to-date version of Ubuntu Lucid 32bit, even with the ALSA backport
modules installed.

I've changed the status of this bug back to Confirmed. Antoine, please
don't mark bugs as 'In Progress' unless they really are. That status was
probably the reason why this bug stayed untouched for one and a half
year.
