Closing as invalid again.
Please refer to bug 237278 for the new module, required for 2.6.24-18. This is
a different issue than this original bug report (which is still invalid).

Update:
I think the /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup trick worked before because I had a
different version of virtualbox. Until the the virtualbox modules package is
updated, you can just boot up using the old linux kernel (2.6.24-17-generic) in
the GRUB boot menu (assuming that's how you're set up).

same problem
linux kernel updated to 2.6.24-18, but virtualbox-ose-modules-generic only goes
to 2.6.24-17. This may be the problem. In the past running sudo
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup seemed to fix the problem, not this time though.

My Ubuntu Hardy system has been updated twice with security updates and
I'm now running Linux kernel 2.6.24-18-generic:

Sorry for the bogus bug report. Thank you for the clarification.

"header files" != "kernel module". You need (kernel) header files to
build kernel modules, but that's not relevant here.
You should install "virtualbox-ose-modules-generic", not "virtualbox-
ose-guest-modules-generic". The latter is for guest additions _inside_ a
Virtualbox.
I'm closing this bug
When I initially installed vbox-ose, I installed the header files for my
current kernel. After I upgraded the kernel, I noticed the above
solution in the error message where it says to install "virtualbox-ose-
modules-generic", which takes care of header files, but encountered an
error when attemp
Please post the output of the following commands:
uname -a
dpkg -l | grep virtualbox-ose
I guess that you had only the specific package for the previous kernel
installed, but not the meta package for your kernel flavor, e.g.
"virtualbox-ose-modules-generic", which would take care of upgrades.
**
Confirming it - exactly the same error messages - AMD64 - after
upgrading to Linux ubuntu 2.6.24-15-generic - I believe it stopped
working at 2.6.24-14 - it was working fine (every second windows boot
though) with 2.6.24-12
