I have uninstalled completely/reinstalled with Synaptic, although your commands should bring to the same result. Why do you launch dpkg-reconfigure after you edited usplash.conf? I can't get the meaning... Anyway, now my usplash.conf reports 1280x800, a resolution that I have never tried before.

Regarding the above - does uninstalling and reinstalling usplash fix it? I did a... $ sudo apt-get remove usplash usplash-theme-ubuntu --purge $ sudo apt-get install usplash usplash-theme-ubuntu ...then I edited my usplash.conf and changed the values to 1024x768 and issued a... $ sudo dpkg-recon
