There are better ways (input device properties) to turn things off, and
SHMConfig is easily enabled through fdi files. syndaemon has been ported
to input device properties, as referenced in that recent mailing list
thread.
As for your comment that syndaemon might be on by default soon, I hardly

On Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 i386 I tried the various workarounds listed
including blacklisting psmouse but they all had problems. Either
gsynaptics couldn't configure the device or the touchpad and a connected

A combination that worked for me, comment out the options "Device" and

A couple of tips:
1. Check that the synaptics driver
(/usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so) is executable, (ie. -rwxr-xr-x)
nb. use "chmod 755" to make executable
2. "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" should, in part, give the output as
follows...
I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=0007
You actually can have entries for both pointing devices included.
Unfortunately, syndaemon et al. refuse to operate unless the synaptics
touchpad is the first entry in the InputDevice line for mice in the
ServerLayout section. Unfortunately, in this scenario the general mouse

Wouldn't be much of an xorg.conf with just a section for the mouse.
I was just quoting that one section because that was the only
relevant one to your suggested fix. My section for the touchpad
looks just like yours.

It looks like you aren't even using the synaptics driver. You might
want to install the synaptics driver and then change the 'Driver' line
in the xorg.conf file to point to that driver.
Make a backup of your xorg.conf file and if it breaks the touchpad
just revert back to the old xorg.conf :)

I don;t have a section like that in xorg. For the
mouse I only have:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
EndSection
and I don;t want to delete it. So the fix doesn't apply to my case.
By the way,
Fixed!
I removed and re-added the Gsynaptics tool and removed the default
section for the Mouse input device. My xorg.conf file follows.
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Layout0"
Screen 0 "Screen0"
InputDevice"Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

Same as the original poster, I have tried all the howtos etc and it

Is there some way to make this work?
