I also think this is a good idea. I often use transfer files between
Linux and Windows. I switched to Kate (KDE's text editor) because it
handles other newlines.

I've had no problem with encoding, only problem i had was that notepad,
unlike every other editor does not recognize unix newlines and will just
display as one big line. its one of the reasons windows sucks. maybe
there should be a option for how to do newlines but a warning should be
there that it

ah, didn't know which encoding to use, and i believe that would
confuse other users as well
the main thing that is bugging me is if i save a file using gedit,
that text is shown in one line only, so i guess it's not the
encoding,but the use of \r\n in windows text files for new lines

I think the Windows Encoding depends on the Windows Version and the
selected Locale. ANSI is the default in the US in Windows 98, in germany
it is iso-8859-15. I think Vista uses utf-8 by default.
You can select each encoding in the Save As... Dialog.
