I believe this problem occurs when users gateway returns a html page
instead of the respective package file. If a check on the file to make
sure it's not a html page is done before attempting to use it, the
problem could be avoided, or at least made known to the user.

better workaround : delete the file /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_hardy_universe_i18n_Translation-fr each time you do an
apt-get update

A temporary workaround : disable the universe source. At least you would
be able to use the package managers.

I think it depends on which mirror you are using...
You might have to wait a few hours for a sync.
Otherwise the fix is confirmed (by myself :))

Thanks for your analysis Yves, but French Translators couldn't do
anything for now. We can only modify translated strings via Launchpad.
Obviously there's a problem with 3dchess description and, as I said
previously, this has been fixed in Launchpad. We now have to wait a new
sync of universe with

The only thing I've noticed in those translations is two ’ (instead of
') in 3dchess description. I've changed this string yesterday in
Launchpad. Anyway this was an old translation (2006), I don't think this
could solve the problem.
