I'm seeing the same thing on ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) with vncserver 3.3.7-14ubuntu1, fresh install. ("could not open default font 'fixed'") I tried to work around it with the following: cd /usr/share/X11/ ln -s /usr/share/fonts/X11 fonts This lets it start up and run gnome. But xmms' playlist
