I'm seeing the same thing on ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) with vncserver
3.3.7-14ubuntu1, fresh install. ("could not open default font 'fixed'")
I tried to work around it with the following:

   cd /usr/share/X11/
   ln -s /usr/share/fonts/X11 fonts

This lets it start up and run gnome. But xmms' playlist shows squares
instead of characters in the song titles.  That's only in the playlist;
the main xmms window has legible text. All other tested applications
have legible text, too. xmms playlist looks fine on the regular X
display.

I backed out my fix and repeated John Fettig's fix
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vnc/+bug/18593/comments/9)
(excepy my xorg.conf didn't have any FontPath lines to comment out).
The result did NOT work for me, possibly because it had no FontPath
lines?

I do not see this problem with tightvncserver 1.2.9-21 (but it does have
the illegible playlist text). Nor do I see the problem with vnc4server
(and it does NOT have the illegible playlist text problem). So I can't
decide if the illegible text problem is at all related to the fixed font
problem; I mention it here in case it is.

In summary, vncserver in gutsy still can't find fixed font, but
vnc4server works fine for me. I'm willing to help diagnose the problem.

Jeremy

P.S. Thanks for everyone's hard work.
