I haven't managed to catch it again. It's been some time since this
last occurred, so I think we can chalk it up to some transitory bios
wierdness.

investigate this problem. I suggest turning on the following 2 config options
and rebuilding your kernel:
ACPI_DEBUG=y
The ACPI driver can optionally report errors with a great deal
of verbosity. Saying

I've discovered that this laptop will boot with ACPI enabled, but only
if the laptop is running on battery. After it's booted, plugging the
power in doesn't have any adverse effect.

Further investigation: adding printk's everywhere, I can determine that it
hangs in acpi_enable_subsystem. It prints "Enabling ACPI mode", but doesn't
get to "Installing default handler":
