Unfortunately I don't even have the entries that jtrupp mentioned in his
post. My system is still broken. Funny thing is, it's a fresh install,
therefore I have no software to work with...

Found the following two entries had been added to /etc/apt/sources.list
following automatic updates.

If you reboot after receiving this error you will be unable to get back
into the system. Boot up will hang at "Started Update UTMP about System
Runlevel Changes. Alt-F2 allows you to switch to login prompt. However,
attempts to purge gnome and related dependencies or perform any updates
fail.
