Not quite sure what caused the issue, but great to hear that it has been

Thanks for your help with my problem. I have in the end given the
computer to our local 'Computer Doctor' who has fixed it. I didn't
understand what he did!! but he only charged £15!!

Hm... It should offer you an update automatically if you are not running
the latest version. I must admit I'm not quite sure what's going on
here.
If you open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t), could you run the following command:
apt policy firefox
and paste the output here?
It should tell us which version
I have looked in 'Software updates' and it said Software is up to date?

Could you check "Software updates" (see attached image), it will likely
have some available updates?
Applications in Ubuntu are available through Ubuntu Software
(https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/addremove-install.html), which
is the "app store". Most things can be found there and installed

Yes, Firefox is set to update automatically but doesn’t. Yes I am
running UBUNTU 16.04 LTS but no updates have been notified.Thank you for
mentioning Dash, as a new Ubuntu user and computer novice I had not
heard of it!! However I couldn't find a mention of Software Updates. I
have downloaded Firef

I must admit I'm not sure what you mean by "auto is set", is this some
Firefox setting?
However, new versions of Firefox should be available along with any
other updates to installed packages in Ubuntu. Could you please check
in update-manager (or look for "Software updates
