Well, I can't reproduce the bug any more (in karmic and jaunty). Maybe
it's because I switched to Ubuntu completely (my Windows activates no
more, I've managed to kill it at last :-) ) and re-formatted all
partitions in EXT3. Yet I'm pretty sure the bug has been fixed since I
get no errors while co

please provide the requested information? Thanks!

Yes, it is. The freeze usually happens when copying files with nautilus
or something. the cp command seems more stable, but sometimes it causes
freezes too.
Seems that ntfs3g is more prone to freezing, while fat32 is also
affected. I never got freeze with ext3.
This is definitely a major problem
Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10?

Hello,
the freeze occurs on my machine as well, I have three different SATA
harddrives on my computer, and I even tried with 3 others as well. The
freeze seems to occur anywhere between 5GB to 20GB. My motherboard is

My crash has been an issue with some ATI USB-controllers.
Maybe everybody wants to recheck with a ubuntu kernel version > 2.6.24-14

Have you tried using xargs to copy folder by folder ?
The following should copy all files recursively from directory $1
to directory $2, and echo each move command just before doing it:
ls $1 | xargs -I {} -t cp -Rv $1/{} $2/{}
I'm not at my machine at the moment so it's untested.

This is really annoying when you try to backup 500GB :(
Still, the problem seems to kind of common, since a friend of mine has the same
problem.

I encountered the same error. The situation:
- Fully up-to-date Ubuntu server 7.10 (one week old!)
- Two harddisks (all checked, they're fine) Both master, disk 1 on first
channel, disk 2 on second channel)
- Disk 1: 2 partitions, both ext3, one mounted as root, other as /media/sda2.
