Thank you, Paul, for your investigations. Well, if you say this is fixed in Jaunty I am going to close this bug as "fix released". The problem is that we can't do anything for Ubuntu versions before 9.04. Since over the time no one seemed to have an idea where the bug comes from, we don't know what

Finally managed to get at the hardware again to test 9.04 against it and works fine (as far as the ITE controller card is concerned anyway), so although I can't speak for the 8.04 or 8.10 releases, 9.04 has fixed the problem.
