Because as far as I understood, 16.04 is a LTS and shoud last 5 years,
actually I'm running 17.04 which is a STS (9 months), meaning that myself
and others will have to install 18.04.
I say others because yesterday I wanted to install 16.04 on a friend's PC
(an Asus),

- I've installed 17.04 beta one week ago
- wifi works beautifully
I could say
- solved on the "17.04 non LTS"
- BUT not solved on the "16.04 LTS" which I would like to use till the end of
support (another 4 years)

I rebooted a first time (on 4.7)
took RJ45 out
no wifi
I connected RJ45 to install Chromium
rebooted a 2nd time, RJ45 out, no wifi

Finally I did it ... I made a stupid mistake trying to install Linux
header instead of Linux image.
Here is the installed new kernel

Finally I could install the new kernel after an ultimate update & upgrade.
Here is the result:
on the old PC: no change, no wifi
On the brand new one:
I started with RJ45 ethernet OK
then I unplugged RJ45
impossible to activate wifi

My daughter's got a rather old HP PC (Compaq 6510b, released in April 2009)
which works beautifully with LTS version 10.04.
Unfortunately this version is not maintained any more, so I proposed her to
install the latest one 16.04 32b.
And same problem again, Wifi does not work
Some additional news.
I've asked to a PC integrator company to do the following job on any recent
laptop. The brand is not important to me, I just want wifi in operation.

Another piece of information. I just reinstalled Ub 16.04 from yesterday's
daily version. I started w/ RJ45 connected and finally I got wifi from my box.

In order to give you more info, you have to know that it was the same problem
on 14.04 (different kernel).
That's the reason why I've switched to 16.04 which is in the near future the
latest LTS.

- First wifi setup OK, after reboot, no access.
- Same story after some modifications coming from the French wifi forum
: after modification, sometimes OK, after reboot, nothing

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
