To be clear, g77 is version 3.4, and gfortran is version 4.1

I still have to check this, I use g77 and R functions I write all the
time, so I have to remove a bunch of roll backs.
I currently run the following /etc/apt/preferences. I do want to check
this and if it works upgrade to fiesty on my laptop.
Package: lapack3-dev
Pin: release a=edgy

used pinning to down grade.
first i tried to upgrade g77 to gusty, where my simple program compiled.
the problem i had was with R and octave. I compiled the latest R from source
and still had problems with gusty.
I downgraded g77, gfortran, octave, R, lapack3-dev, atlas-sse-dev and
their dep.
