Fixed it by removing 386 kernel for generic kernel. The update today
swapped me out on kernels, too.

after a while I fixed the problem with the following:
sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

I have this very problem with my laptop (VGN-SZ4XN).
Moreover also the external mic and speakers don't work: whatever I plug is mute.
it's the first time I write a comment: if there is anything (log files,

Re-installing the alsa driver from alsa-project.org restored the capture
and mic settings, but they still do not seem to be working. Progress at
least.
