hey! after a while I fixed the problem with the following:
sudo apt-get install module-assistant sudo m-a update sudo m-a prepare sudo m-a a-i alsa for more details, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.22/+bug/134146 Now everything works fine by I using the OSS, not the HDA. I've tested the laptop speakers, the external speakers and the built-in mic.
