I just installed the backports and certainly something new has happend.
The new .asoundrc.asoundconf file seems promising, however this is the
error that I get when trying to run alsamixer:

I tested this with with the latest (download yesterday) Gutsy CD and the
sound actually worked. However the volume control did not work because
it was set to modify the wrong mixer channel.
This card seems to not have a "master channel" which forces the user to
choose a certain output to change vo
This soundcard works, the problem is getting there. The sound isn't
always perfect, but still..
What you need to do is:
1. Toggle the IEC958 switch in alsamixer or gnome volume control (I believe it
should be set to OFF, as this disables digital output). In alsamixer this
switch is the first one
Upstream. ALSA developers are sadly aware of the situation. Creative
refuse to hand out data sheets.

Sadly, this card isn't supported yet. From the Alsa project:
[Unsupported] [PCI] Card delivered to developers. Completely new
architecture. Creative actively preventing support due to no datasheets
being released to ALSA developers. Reverse engineering work not started
due to lack of time.

downloaded and lunched the Gutsy Gibbon version from CD. Then i did all the
tests to check if i am getting any sound but it seems that the problem still
there, it looks exactly like the 7.04 version. Howeve
