Problem resolved by removing the Broken package then redoing the
installation.
Question: Is there a better way of alerting a user to Broken packages in
the installation process than hours searching the inter

Reviewing the files from your upgrade attempt you seem to have enabled a
PPA that provides Xorg packages. This will prevent the upgrade as that
PPA contains different versions of packages essential to Ubuntu
