To fix this in Linux Mint 16 and Ubuntu 13.10, one needs to add the
'acpi_backlight=vendor' to the 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=' in the
'/etc/default/grub' file, running 'sudo update-grub', and then restart
the computer.
For Linux Mint 17 and Ubuntu 14.10, this is fixed by creating/editing the
