Hm, "[…] the current installer isn't able to do this […]" still sounds
pretty much like a bug and I _think_ this one here could be a duplicate

I have found the source of the problem.
the solution was found here:

It seems that for HDDs larger than 2TB, they need to be explicitly set
to Partition table of GPT, and the current installer isn't able to do
this as well as not being able to setu
By going back into the Partitioner I can then go to the two partitions
listed in the RAID array, and mark the swap one as swap and the 3TB one
as etx4 and root /
This then allows the install to continue along swimmingly until right at
the very end, when it fails to instal grub:
"Unable to install
As far as I can see, the main problem is that it doesn't allow you to
turn the "Bootable Flag to On".
This also causes the grub installation to fail.
I have also tried "Automatically Partition the Free Space" when doing "Create
Partition"
This gives each 3TB drive:
1.0 MB FREE SPAC
Funny, I was just helping someone on irc last night set up a raid5
system and he ran into the same problem. You don't get the
primary/extended option if you are using GPT instead of MSDOS partition
tables because they only apply on MSDOS.
