Well this is embarrasing; I've just booted into 13.04 and 'lp -d PDF
i-9g.pdf' is now working...
$ apt-cache policy qpdf

cups-filter's pdftopdf before around 1.0.21 was based on poppler, not
qpdf.

Thank, I fully understand the difference between qpdfview and qpdf.
ldd /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf | grep qpdf
results in no data.
I have these installed:
$ dpkg -l | grep qpdf
ii libqpdf13 5.0.1-1~precise1
runtime l
The qpdfview program is not related to qpdf. They just have an
unfortunate similarity in their names.
There was a bug in qpdf that could cause loss of form data in some
cases, but this bug was fixed in qpdf 5.0.0. I don't remember whether
4.2.0 had the fix in it, but I don't think it did.
