Well this is embarrasing; I've just booted into 13.04 and 'lp -d PDF
i-9g.pdf' is now working...

$ apt-cache policy qpdf
qpdf:
  Installed: 4.2.0-2
  Candidate: 4.2.0-2
  Version table:
 *** 4.2.0-2 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
g@VMware:~/tempdir$ apt-cache policy cups-filters
cups-filters:
  Installed: 1.0.40-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1.0.40-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1.0.40-0ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Based on the above and Comment #8 from Tobias I'll mark this 'Invalid'. Sorry
for the noise.
Q. For the 12.04 'lp' issue, do I file a bug against poppler, cups, what?
Thanks.
