It previously ran Win NT with connection to corporate network.
The Ethernet card was an option put in the notebook by IBM at time of purchase.

ethtool seems to indicate that the network adapter is not connected,
"Link detected: no". What kind of physical setup do you have? Has the
network adapter in that system worked previously?
