Wow, this bug appears again for me on Ubuntu 17.04. Four years later!?
However, the stacktrace changed a bit but the runtime error is the same
as in #7 ("To make asynchronous calls, receive signals or export
objects, D-Bus connections must be attached to a main loop by passing
mainloop…"):

Thanks for the information! Indeed, the trick also worked for me, but I
don’t know what exactly this breaks. But at least I can use the plugin
for now.

A temporal solution is to comment out line 160
/usr/lib/gedit/plugins/latex/job.py". It works for me. It might be some
specific function was disabled through this approach. But it works
perfect for me.

Strange, in a fresh environment, the debian version loads fine. But in
my regular environment, it fails with above error message. Is this a
migration issue? I tried deleting .config/gedit, but without success.

Great, as suggested in #6 I installed the plugin from Debian. Just download the
deb file from a mirror[0] and install it (double clicking should open the
software center). Works for me.
Hopefully the plugin gets updated in Ubuntu as well, latest with the next
version. :) Not really user friendly
The last one is actually a bug in rubber with \pdfoutput=1. The plugin
itself seems to work fine.

I was able to install and load the Debian version. However, I get an

version 3.8 has been uploaded to Debian some days ago, you can try to
get and install it, it should have no dependency problems with Ubuntu
13.10.
To have it in Ubuntu by default, i'm sorry, but I think you've to wait
the next release.

The dependencies might need to be adjusted as well. I just tried to
compile and install manual, but couldn't get it running. I get an error
due a missing python3 dbus dependency exactly as described in [0].
