Two months ago, I removed the Toshiba combo from the computer, as I was
not using it. I had also to remove a broken harddisk.
Anyway, I have not had this issue for a long time; particularly I don't
have have it now with kernels 2.6.26 and 2.6.27.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

I updated to kernel 2.6.20-16.29 and now it boots in a normal timeframe
without having to add the irqpoll option.
However, the led on the tower that indicates disk accesses flashes steadily.
