It looks like I didn't upgrade from 13.04 beta to the final release
properly. Since I have done the clean install I have been able to
reboot w/out hanging and power off actually powers off. In addition,
while I have seen a few of the kernel messages about the hard disk, they
do not repeat and the
sorry for the double comment - forgot to turn off "tap to click". In
any case, what I thought was a hardware problem was just a boot loader
problem After some convolutions, I have my system up again.

I have only had 13.04 on this machine. I have a clean install of
13.04/amd64/desktop from the release media, instead of the beta media.
I've re-installed most of my packages and am waiting to see if the
problem occurs again. Assuming the problem comes back, I will test the
upstream kernel next.
I have a toshiba hard drive. My system has experienced a hardware
failure, and is going out for repair. Once I have it back I will
retest, as well as check the upstream kernel.
