My mistake (I forgot you posted it "below the fold" in an earlier comment.
One solution (that would hopefully be driver agnostic) might be to use
the /dev/cdrom symlinks in place of /dev/scd? in your /etc/fstab ...

I still had the problem in the new kernel. The older kernel works

My problem went away when I started the older kernel. Restart the
computer, escape when the grub boot menu appears and select the older
kernel (not recovery mode!). I will get back to you when I boot the new
kernel again.
