I've been thinking about this for a while. The NVIDIA binary drivers appear to
be hanging just before it sets the screen resolution and I suspect NVIDIA are
the best people to ask as to why that would be happening. The only thing I can

sorry i mistyped the last line. If I reboot my computer after
selecting the nvidia driver for my fx 5500, and tell my bios to boot
with the onboard card, and switch cables, the fx 5500 driver is
changed to vesa, and card to vesa as well

Yes the caps lock key works
I noticed that, when removing splash, the computer hangs for a minute or two

I have a second integrated graphics card, it is a geforce 4 mx. If I move

The only thing I can do after the black screen is manually restart my
computer (hold the power button until it shuts down, then press the
power button again)

non-quiet boot, then the screen went black like before.
Another thing to note, I can boot the kernel into recovery mode and
everything works fine, as long as I don't start X.

At grub press e to edit "Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic". Press e
again to edit the kernel line. Backspace away the usplash parameter and
press return. Press b to boot the modified line. These changes will not
last past a reboot.

Setting to linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 because user is using Feisty
not Gusty.
Kyle:
When your computer starts can you use grub to remove splash from the kernel
line (this will disable the boot progress bar) and see if there is any
difference?
