I've been thinking about this for a while. The NVIDIA binary drivers appear to 
be hanging just before it sets the screen resolution and I suspect NVIDIA are 
the best people to ask as to why that would be happening. The only thing I can 
suggest is that if your BIOS gives you an option to disable the onboard 
graphics card try to do so and report back if you get any further. The other 
thing you can do if you DON'T need to use your GeForce 4MX  onboard card is to 
install the nvidia-glx-new drivers and again see if you get any further. Be 
warned - nvidia-glx-new does not support the GeForce MX4.
