Sorry last post was before I read about dider's post and yes,disabling
tcp_window_scaling solves the problem. Tell me if you need any more help
solving that permanently.

Here is the background the bloody modem is running its own subnet 10.0.0.0
where the router connects via dhcp (and NAT). The router is running it's subnet
on 192.168.1.0 with another NAT. It seems linux cannot handle the excitement of
beeing behind two NATs and I have to admit i

Well I have removed the "Roaming mode" has been deselected, there are no
proxy settings. The results are exactly the same, however I have noticed

On the affected machine, could you please try to ping www.ubuntu.com and
archive.ubuntu.com? I can reproduce the lack of ping response from
www.abc.net.au, but this may be related to the www.abc.ne.au network
connection, rather than either my or your local connection.
