Partial success: Here is the background the bloody modem is running its own subnet 10.0.0.0 where the router connects via dhcp (and NAT). The router is running it's subnet on 192.168.1.0 with another NAT. It seems linux cannot handle the excitement of beeing behind two NATs and I have to admit is a dodgy rig. Nevertheless Mac OSX's networking and window's networking can handle it for some reason. I might change the configuration to work around it but I believe I have found (my first) bug somewhere in networking.
