This is probably a bug in usplash :
- if I remove usplash from the boot line, the computer boots fine ;
- running usplash-test.sh from the usplash source package completely crashes my
computer.
The bug is present in Gutsy x86_64 with latest updates.
It is corrected since Hardy x86_64.

I've done some more testing on this bug :
- I changed the motherboard (different manufacturer, same chipset) and disabled
everything onboard and it still crashes
- when I enable the splash screen but force a vga= option in grub, it doesn't
crash appart from the single vga=816 option... (all 4

Hmm, I'm not sure the xorg.conf will help.
The freeze really happens just after grub, not only some times after.
I wonder if it might not be when loading the first graphic driver for the
console display (isn't this vesa ?)
Here's my lspci, I'll post the xorg.conf just below.

The output of 'lspci -vvnn' and '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' from your system
would be helpful in troubleshooting and resolving this issue. Thanks in
advance.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I just moved to Gutsy Tribe 3, with the last official kernel, x86_64 version,
and I still have the bug.
When I try booting with the "splash" grub options, the system freezes with
black screen and caps lock and scrool lock keyboard lights flashing.
I'd be glad to give more information if
