I also have a HP nc8430 T7200 running uncomfortably hot.
I'm on Hardy Beta 64-bit, all updates to date installed.
I also dual-boot with WinXP, there, the temps and battery life are much better.
I would like to change to Linux completely, but on laptops there still is some
streamlining left to do.

I'm running Hardy for a while now and I can confirm that my laptop is
still considerably hotter when I'm running Ubuntu than when I'm running
Windows XP. I haven't tested battery life yet though.

My battery life too has been fairly reduced. I just updated to 7.10
beta last night and I'm also having issues with the DVD drive constantly
clicking when the tray is shut.
Are the battery and / or heat issues linked to the fact that ATI support
is shoddy at best?

Yes. me too ! I thought it was only an impression but it may be real. I
think I lost one third of my laptop autonomy recently : 3 hours before,
2 now. To be sure i will test the autonomy with Edgy liveCD and Feisty.
If confirmed, it would be a HUGE regression.
