I also have a HP nc8430 T7200 running uncomfortably hot. 
I'm on Hardy Beta 64-bit, all updates to date installed.
I also dual-boot with WinXP, there, the temps and battery life are much better.
I would like to change to Linux completely, but on laptops there still is some 
streamlining left to do. Heat/power consumption is clearly one of the major 
problems.
Otherwise, Hardy is VERY close to being a viable option for general use by an 
average user.
