With today's update, there was an improvement. I tried to enable
"Normal effects" and got the message "Desktop effects could not be
enabled". This is much better than the surprising result from before
(see my Screenshot attachment), but the message was not particularly
helpful.

Hi again.
Just to confirm, dropping screen depth to 16 bits works OK (i.e. full witdth).
The window manager problems were due (I think) to a corrupt GCONF.
When in 24bit, I attempted to solve this through DRICONF but was unable to find
any settings which prevented the problem occuring.

Hi,
Actually droping X depth to 16 bit seems to make the problem go away
however I've manage to stuff the system somehow, in that I don't have a window
manager started with Compiz.
I guess I'll have to either have to find what been broken, or re-install (which
might be quicker).
Simon.

This is because your max texture size is smaller than your screen
resolution. What video card/driver are you using? You may be able to
work around with with driconf.
