clamtk 2.32 is now in Gutsy and appears to work correctly with the new
clamav. I will request a Feisty backport.

you are having. I experimented with clamtk fairly extensively while
investigating this and related bugs to make sure that clamav wasn't

Running "freshclam -v" as root may fix the problem. My definitions are
updating and are up to date, I can not use

I've confirmed that if you start clamtk with root access (gksudo or
kdesu) it will trigger a signature update attempt. This is not strictly
speaking necessary for signatures. Klamav manages to do it using user
level access.

The freshclam daemon that is part of clamav checks hourly for new virus
definitions, so there is no issue with correct/up to date virus checking
here.
The work around is to look in the freshclam log directly.
